How to find an Aupair Job

I moved to Germany because I was offered a position to be an aupair for five children between the ages of one and thirteen. I never planned on being an aupair because it wasn’t a job that I knew existed until a little over a year ago. It has become wildly popular and I understand why. It is a great job for people who love kids because you have no living expenses and you get a monthly salary (although it is small). I thought it would be good to tell you guys how I got hired for my first job and how I just got hired for another.

I love this website, it is called GreatAupair and it is a platform that allows you to search for aupair, nanny, tutor, housekeeping, elderly care, house sitting, and pet sitting jobs. It is free to register and it only took me about 20 minutes to make my profile. It is important to include your likes, interests, and hobbies in your profile because it will help you find a family who has similar interests as you. You don’t want to be paired with an outdoor/sportsy family if you only like to stay indoors and read or watch television and vice versa. It is also important to be honest, if you don’t think you are able to keep a newborn, do not agree to take that job. It is good to challenge yourself and every job will challenge you but you need to make sure that you are capable of doing the job and that you can keep the child or children safe.

Once you have created your profile, you will be able to contact families. You have to go through and look through profiles to apply to jobs. Usually, applying just means liking a family and then it notifies the family of your interest. Families will also like you so you will have the two options. It is important that you respond quickly to interested families because they are frequently speaking to other people at the same time so someone may get an offer before you if you are too slow. Generally, you start talking through messages but I think it is very important to video call with the family before you start the job. It is hard to see people’s personalities and attitudes through a message or email but that can be a little easier to see in a video call. If you have messaged them and video called with them and you think you’d be interested in the job than you can ask them about accepting the job! Hopefully they will say yes! If they don’t, you have to start over but hopefully that won’t happen.

I hope this has given you an idea of what it is like to find an aupair job and I hope it has made it a little easier! Good luck!
